It Overtakes Me {31 July 2011}

*Edit: The links should work now.*

Of course, you didn’t think I’d come back to my blog without this column, did you? I didn’t think so.

The beautiful photo above was taken by Eliza Claire. She does amazing work.

An Angry Birds birthday party? Oh, yeah!

Since I am going to school for retail management, I have a business plan in the works that will be complete for my capstone project. This post on A Beautiful Mess makes me even more excited to keep working on it! Great job, Elsie!

I’m a little obsessed with books. Not necessarily reading them, but I love the look of piles of books all over the place. Combining that with fashion is just amazing to me. Therefore, these photos from Janetteria are breathtaking.

I know it’s half a year away, but I’m excited to decorate for Christmas this year. Fancy House Road has some posts about Christmas color trends – like silver and green – and even DIY ideas – like these ornaments – for this coming year. Are you ready?

WWD posted an article about some of the best finds at their Paris Trade Show. My favorites? The headpieces and jewelry at Coralie de Seynes and the fine jewelry at Sigomonta.

Fashionista posted a list of some of Tim Gunn’s best sayings. There are some great ones in here!

Also on Fashionista this week, they announced the (reported) cast list for the Sex and the City prequel. I don’t know – I would love to see Blake as Carrie instead of Samantha. What do you think?

I’m not much of drinker. I can drink socially, but I don’t love the taste of alcohol. I do, however, LOVE jello shots. So good! Here are some pretty ones.

As a lover of old movies – and a sucker for celebrity gossip – I found this article on the affairs of Clark Gable extremely interesting.

Do you remember the Nickelodean shows from the 90’s? They’re back on TeenNick. Clarissa Explains it All is already on my DVR! What do you want to see come back?

I’m not the most organized person in the world. The last couple of years, I’ve actually gotten a lot better. My boyfriend, believe it or not, is the one who helped me a lot with that. Don’t tell him I said that, though. I don’t want him to get a big head. 😉 Anyway, if you need help in that department, here are some organizing tips from Stacks And Stacks.

I can't tell you how much I love this video. It is definitely the phase of creativity I am in right now.
This is another creativity video. Love this one, as well.

Nail Polish of the Week

I told you I would be back!

I’ve been through a lot in the last couple of months. I’m going to spare you most of the details, because honestly they are a little boring. I did put on a fashion show, which I mentioned in an earlier post, that came out really great! I also competed in a fashion challenge – that I didn’t win, but it was a great experience. My sister wrote about it on her blog, though.

Anyway, I’m starting this off with a new nail polish of the week. I’ve got to admit that I got the idea from several blogs around the internet, but I added my own glittery little touch to it. I think it came out really pretty. Excuse the short nails – they haven’t been getting much care lately.

Are y’all ready for Fashion Week?

Ohhh I’m so excited! Fashion Week starts this week. I don’t know how I’m going to balance looking at all these shows plus finals and everything else I have coming up. You’re all going to have to bear with me through the next month or so. I’m going to have a lot going on. But I’ll try to stay on top of posting to keep you updated.

This is what I do. … I update my friends on what’s going on with fashion week. If you add me or “Like” me on Facebook, or even follow me on Twitter, I’ll make sure you see everything as I do. Blog posts take a little longer to put together. 🙂

See the Good

I was watching BYU TV today (Yup … one of my craft shows. See? Told you there’s so much you can get from them!) and this commercial came on:

I love this! It reminded me of Things I Love Thursday. Awesome.

Then I found their YouTube channel, which you should go to now. This is totally what I’ve been trying to do lately. 🙂

It Overtakes Me {29 Aug 10}

Kemah, Texas
Photo by me 🙂 (and yes, that's my boyfriend)

Just a little warning: this post is going to be a little short this week. My computer decided to not turn on for a whole day this week, so I’ve been trying to make up for that day and haven’t been able to spend time surfing around the web. (Note: Don’t want this to happen again? Click “donate” in the sidebar and help me buy a new computer! Or at least fix this one. Which might end up costing the same amount.) Here are a few things I did find, though.

I accidentally clicked on an e-mail from Thrillest Nation on Tuesday morning and I’m glad I did. They always send the most awesome e-mails, I just never have time to read the whole article, so I usually pass them by. In this particular e-mail, they had an article on Vandilized Vintage. The pictures caught my attention, so I went to the store. It’s like thrift store finds that have been redone in a super quirky way. Look at their Lover Hater tea set and their Mad House plate. I kinda love this store.

Solange Azagury-Partridge ~ Oh my goodness – you have to go to this site. Click the image, click “jewellery” and go through each collection. I really can’t believe how amazing each piece is. I’m kind of devastated that she doesn’t have a store in Houston 😦 Some of my favorites? The Supernova ring, the Offering ring, the whole Black Rainbows collection, the Far Out necklace, the Daisy ring, the Eye ring, the Hotlips ring, the Secret Diamond ring (it’s like 3 rings in one!) and the Random necklace. I know I have tons of favorites, but that’s just how AMAZING this site is.

I really want these shoes … I saw them in the ad in Vogue and I kind of HAVE to have them! You can pre-order now and they ship right before my birthday. *HINT HINT*

Why are the East of Cities Usually Poorer? is a super interesting article! It really sounds like a good reason.

Cleanse The Energy In Your Wallet … Love it! Absolutely need to do this with my wallet asap!

That’s it for this week! I’ll try to make next week doubly as entertaining as usual to make up for the lack of links this time. Until then, go check out the rest of my blog. 🙂

When I was a kid

Let’s take a trip back in time.

Watch this video before moving on.
It sets the mood for the rest of the post. 🙂

According to my mom, when I was a kid, I used to love Boy George. I never really thought about why that was until now. I love things that are a little off; things that you look at and think “Wow! That’s interesting!” I don’t like the boring and I don’t like it when I’m not entertained. (On a side note … squiggly red spell check line under the word = BEST INVENTION EVER!) I don’t like to see things I’ve seen before.

Are you KIDDING me with this video? Fabulous!

I wish there were more interviews like that now a days. You can’t really look away from these people. I mean you have Joan Rivers, who is a complete character in herself interviewing Boy George who is totally in his zone, with Seinfeld sitting right beside him … and you know what he’s thinking. He’s thinking “what a freak,” because that’s just how Seinfeld is. You’re watching Joan ask Boy George these extremely personal questions and he’s answering all of them very proudly. He’s not afraid to be himself. I mean, how many people do you know that could walk into a store in Barcelona and say “I could make a fabulous outfit out of this bedspread!,” and wear that outfit proudly in front of the whole world?

Don’t remember Culture Club?

Love that song! 🙂
(You have to click the link in the video to watch it)

I just want to be one of the girls in the fabulous dresses. They all look as if they just stepped off the Titanic. The harmonica in the chorus reminds me a little of Zydeco, so it probably has a lot to do with my Cajun roots, too.

Back then, one of my favorite animals was a unicorn. That probably had something to do with my Rainbow Brite obsession. I know Starlight was a horse, but he had a star on his head and I always imagined that as his horn (I don’t know why Starlight was a boy. I always wanted it to be a girl. He has pretty rainbow hair). I learned how to wink because of Rainbow Brite. I spent days practicing my “Rainbow Brite wink” in front of the TV. By the way, did you know Rainbow Brite got a makeover? I’m not super happy with it at all. Maybe I’ll do a version of what my take on a modern Rainbow Brite would be. Until then, let’s reminisce.

For the full “Star Sprinkles” episode, click here for part 1 and here for part 2. That was my favorite episode.

While we’re on the topic of cartoons, how about My Little Pony Tales? I think it was their hair I liked. I loved 80’s cartoon hair. It was always so fluffy and full of body. I believe this video might have actually been from the ’90’s version.

This was my favorite of all the theme songs.

I also loved Punky Brewster.  Her unique, quirky style was super cute (remember, this WAS the ’80’s).

I love the fishy kisses at the end.

I know it’s not from the ’80’s, but in the ’90’s, The Nanny was one of my favorite shows. She had the most amazing outfits and wasn’t afraid to step out of the box.

Show me a better theme song.

All of this is bringing back so many memories! What were your favorite things when you were a kid?

The thing about candles…

Ever wonder why you light a candle and the wax builds up on the sides? It’s so annoying. I hate that.

Anyway, I have figured out the secret! Well, I kind of figured it out. Actually I learned it from Elle on YouTube. Is it weird that I love the makeup tutorials? Yes. But they give me wonderful tips like this so I keep watching them.

Ready for me to stop rambling and get to the tip?

When you start your candle, you have to leave it lit for a while. Make sure the wax melts all the way to the glass. Then blow it out. This evens the surface for the next time.

Of course, if you don’t have a candle with glass, do the opposite. That way the wax doesn’t melt over the sides.
