When I was a kid

Let’s take a trip back in time.

Watch this video before moving on.
It sets the mood for the rest of the post. 🙂

According to my mom, when I was a kid, I used to love Boy George. I never really thought about why that was until now. I love things that are a little off; things that you look at and think “Wow! That’s interesting!” I don’t like the boring and I don’t like it when I’m not entertained. (On a side note … squiggly red spell check line under the word = BEST INVENTION EVER!) I don’t like to see things I’ve seen before.

Are you KIDDING me with this video? Fabulous!

I wish there were more interviews like that now a days. You can’t really look away from these people. I mean you have Joan Rivers, who is a complete character in herself interviewing Boy George who is totally in his zone, with Seinfeld sitting right beside him … and you know what he’s thinking. He’s thinking “what a freak,” because that’s just how Seinfeld is. You’re watching Joan ask Boy George these extremely personal questions and he’s answering all of them very proudly. He’s not afraid to be himself. I mean, how many people do you know that could walk into a store in Barcelona and say “I could make a fabulous outfit out of this bedspread!,” and wear that outfit proudly in front of the whole world?

Don’t remember Culture Club?

Love that song! 🙂

I just want to be one of the girls in the fabulous dresses. They all look as if they just stepped off the Titanic. The harmonica in the chorus reminds me a little of Zydeco, so it probably has a lot to do with my Cajun roots, too.

Back then, one of my favorite animals was a unicorn. That probably had something to do with my Rainbow Brite obsession. I know Starlight was a horse, but he had a star on his head and I always imagined that as his horn (I don’t know why Starlight was a boy. I always wanted it to be a girl. He has pretty rainbow hair). I learned how to wink because of Rainbow Brite. I spent days practicing my “Rainbow Brite wink” in front of the TV. By the way, did you know Rainbow Brite got a makeover? I’m not super happy with it at all. Maybe I’ll do a version of what my take on a modern Rainbow Brite would be. Until then, let’s reminisce.

For the full “Star Sprinkles” episode, click here for part 1 and here for part 2. That was my favorite episode.

While we’re on the topic of cartoons, how about My Little Pony Tales? I think it was their hair I liked. I loved 80’s cartoon hair. It was always so fluffy and full of body. I believe this video might have actually been from the ’90’s version.

This was my favorite of all the theme songs.

I also loved Punky Brewster.  Her unique, quirky style was super cute (remember, this WAS the ’80’s).

I love the fishy kisses at the end.

I know it’s not from the ’80’s, but in the ’90’s, The Nanny was one of my favorite shows. She had the most amazing outfits and wasn’t afraid to step out of the box.

Show me a better theme song.

All of this is bringing back so many memories! What were your favorite things when you were a kid?
